Every cut has a letter (A, B, C), and every step shows which lettered parts and which nails and screws go together, so you build the shed like flat-pack furniture, one step at a time.
You also get dimensioned drawings, a materials and shopping list, a cost spreadsheet and CAD files, so the plans answer the questions that come up while you build.
Permit drawing set included
Permit drawing set included, ready to adapt for your permit application; some building departments require stamped drawings. The PDF opens with a permit drawing set for each build: a site plan template, footing plan, framing plan, elevations, section, typical details, a code reference table, a load and span basis sheet and a materials schedule. These are generic DIY plans with no engineer's or architect's stamp, and the code table is a reference, not a guarantee that your office will accept them. The posts are checked as posts fixed in the ground with no help from the walls, and the footings are sized for firm sand or gravel soil. Have a licensed engineer or your local building department review the drawings for your site before you build or apply.
CAD files included
A SketchUp-ready 3D model (.dae, every board a named part) plus DXF drawings for AutoCAD, LibreCAD or FreeCAD, so you can change a size, add your lot lines or hand the drawings to a drafter.
What you build
Plans for a modern three-sided horse run-in shed in 12x24 and 12x36, with an optional tack room bay.
6x6 pressure-treated posts set 48 in down in round concrete footings, two-ply beams, 2x12 rafters with a birdsmouth on each beam, 2x4 purlins laid flat, a 3 in 12 metal roof with a 3 ft overhang over the open front, 2x6 stud walls on treated sills with grooved T1-11 siding on three sides, a 30 in band of clear corrugated panels under the back of the roof, and 2x6 kick boards inside to about 4 ft. The tack room build adds a front wall with a 36 in prehung door and a clear clerestory, and a stud partition. The floor, fences, gates, feeders and electrical are not included.
- About 8 ft clear at the back wall and almost 11 ft clear at the open front, the heights horse care guides ask for
- A wide open front, with the posts about 7 ft apart so horses can walk in and turn
- Kick boards inside every wall a horse can reach, no sharp edges inside, and a note on pressure-treated wood and chewing
- Footing layout, roof framing plan, rafter seat, back wall and tack room front wall details, and 10 numbered steps (11 with the tack room), one drawing each
- A cost workbook with every shopping line priced from a store page or published source, with the source and date beside it
Tall and large
The shed is about 13 ft 9 in to the top of the roof at the open front and covers about 385 to 575 sq ft of roof with its overhangs. Many places exempt only very small outbuildings, and some have separate rules for agricultural or livestock buildings: call your office with the size and height before you buy lumber. The plans use 30 psf of roof snow and a 90 mph planning wind; where yours are different, use local plans or ask an engineer.
What you get
- The plan PDF: dimensioned drawings, lettered parts and numbered steps with one drawing each, hardware and shopping lists for all three builds
