Where the price per square foot comes from
We divide the listed price of every shed kit in our catalog by its nominal floor area and take the median for each material, plus the 10th and 90th percentiles so you see a realistic range rather than one number. Budget steel kits are very cheap per square foot; premium steel lines such as tall, high-gable models cost several times more. Resin and vinyl sit in the middle, and wood kits vary most. The cost per square foot table shows the full spread.
Costs people forget
- Foundation: a gravel pad for an 8x10 is about 2.3 tons of stone plus timber and fabric.
- Floor: many steel kits ship without one, and a floor frame kit adds to the total.
- Anchors: a kit for a mid-size shed.
- Fit-out: shelving, hooks, a solar light and a proper lock.
- Delivery and assembly: not included here, and large kits can take two people a weekend or more.

Is it cheaper to build a shed or buy a kit?
For small and mid-size sheds a kit is usually cheaper and much faster, because lumber, roofing and hardware bought separately add up and the design work is done for you. Building from scratch starts to make sense for larger or custom wood sheds, where you control the materials and can spread the cost over time.
Why are steel sheds so much cheaper per square foot?
Budget steel kits use thin galvanized sheet on a light frame, which is inexpensive to make and ship flat. The tradeoff is dents, condensation and usually no floor. Premium steel lines with heavier framing and taller walls cost several times more per square foot and close much of the gap with resin.
