Shed workshop kit: what to buy at three levels

Start with a 4 ft bench, a rechargeable light, a cordless drill kit and a vise. At the serious-hobby level add a 6 ft bench, bench lighting, a chest, an air filter and a miter saw. The full shop adds a hardwood bench, a dust collector, a table saw and a compressor. Every line shows an Amazon pick and a Grizzly Industrial pick.

This is the workshop version of our complete shed builds. Each level adds to the last, so you can stop at the one that matches your shed and your projects. Read the shed-to-workshop guide first for power, floor load and layout, and check that your shed is big enough: an 8x10 supports the weekend level, a 10x12 the hobby level and a 12x16 the full shop. Total your own gear in the shed size calculator. When you add the dust and air level, WorkshopCalc's best dust collectors and best air filtration systems guides compare the options in more depth.

We do not print prices here: Grizzly runs sales that change weekly and Amazon prices move daily, so the buttons show the current price. Nothing was tested in person; picks are researched from specifications and owner reviews.

1. Weekend DIY (8x10 shed and up)

A bench you can work at, light you can see by, and the hand and cordless tools for repairs and small builds.

What you can skip at this level

  • Skip the dust collector and air filter. Sweep up, work with the door open and wear a respirator for sanding.
  • Skip stationary saws. A hand saw and a circular saw cover weekend builds.
  • Skip wiring the shed. Rechargeable lights and a cordless kit work with no power.

2. Serious hobby (10x12 shed and up)

A bigger bench, real bench lighting, a miter saw and air filtration, for regular weekend woodworking. Includes everything from the earlier level.

What you can skip at this level

  • Skip the table saw and compressor until a project demands them.
  • Skip the hardwood bench. A steel bench handles power tools well.
  • Skip the wall-mount collector. A shop vacuum at the miter saw is enough at this level.

3. Full shop (12x16 shed and up)

A hardwood bench, stationary dust collection, a table saw and compressed air, on a permitted subpanel. Includes everything from the earlier level.

What you can skip at this level

  • Skip the compressor if you build with screws and a cordless drill only.
  • Skip the table saw if most of your work is crosscutting and drilling.
  • Do not skip the subpanel at this level: a saw, a collector and a compressor on an extension cord is not safe.
